The use of folic acid supplements increases the concentration of folate in the mother's body. Low levels of maternal folic acid are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. The beneficial effect occurs with an additional daily intake of 400 μg of folic acid at least one month before and at most three months after conception. Folate also contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. They also help in the proper synthesis of amino acids, while playing a role in proper blood production.
