L-ornithine L-aspartate is a combination of two amino acids: L-ornithine and L-aspartic acid. L-ornithine and L-aspartic acid are part of the urea cycle (ornithine cycle), which is involved in the process of urea synthesis and removal of the amino acid from the body.

WHAT IS THE UREA CYCLE?

In humans and mammals, almost 80% of the nitrogen excreted is in the form of urea, which is produced as a result of a number of reactions that occur, including: in the mitochondria of liver cells. These reactions are collectively called the urea cycle or the Krebs-Henseleit cycle.

Ammonia is a toxic product of nitrogen metabolism that must be eliminated from the body. The urea cycle, called the ornithine cycle, converts excess ammonia to urea in the mitochondria of liver cells. Urea is formed, then enters the blood, is filtered by the kidneys and finally excreted in the urine.
