In fact, its history as a medicine begins 3,600 years ago, in ancient Egyptian times, listed in the Ebers papyri as a favorite medicine. Also, women in ancient Babylon are believed to have used a mixture of honey and sesame seeds (halva) to prolong youth and beauty, and Roman soldiers ate the mixture for strength and energy.
10 benefits of sesame:
Diabetes : a study published in the Clinical Nutrition Journal showed that sesame oil improved the effectiveness of the oral antidiabetic drug glibenclamide in type 2 diabetics. Another study published in 2006 in the Journal of Medicinal Foods showed that replacing any other oil with sesame seed oil as the only dietary oil had a beneficial effect in hypertensive diabetic patients, reducing blood pressure and glucose.
Hypertension: a study published in 2006 in the Yale Journal of Biological Medicine showed that sesame seed oil has a beneficial effect in hypertensive patients taking either diuretics or beta-blockers. Substituting any other oils with sesame oil reduced systolic and diastolic pressure to normal, in addition to decreasing lipid peroxidation (body rancidity) and antioxidant status. One of the compounds identified behind the hypertensive effect of sesame seed oil are peptides that act like angiotensin I - converting enzyme inhibitors.
Gingivitis/Plaque: Sesame seed oil has been used for oral hygiene for thousands of years in the Indian medical tradition known as Ayurveda in a process called "oil pulling". This process involves moving the sesame oil in the mouth for a long time and is said to prevent tooth decay, halitosis, bleeding gums, dry throat, and strengthens the teeth, gums and jaw. Clinical research now confirms that this oil is superior to chemical mouthwash (chlorhexidine) in improving plaque-induced gingivitis and that it is capable of reducing the growth of Streptococcus mutans associated with oral plaque formation.
Infant health/massage oil : A study published by the Indian Journal of Medical Research in 2000 showed that massaging babies with sesame oil improved both their growth and post-massage sleep compared to control oils such as mineral.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) : in the animal model of MS, also known as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, sesame seed oil protects mice from the development of the disease by reducing the secretion of IFN-gamma, a key factor in the initiation of inflammation and autoimmune damage in the nervous system. It has also been researched for its potentially beneficial role in another neurodegenerative condition, Hutingdon's disease.
Antibiotic-induced renal disease : sesame oil protects against gentamicin-induced disease in guinea pigs by reducing antibiotic-induced oxidative damage.
Atherosclerosis : Sesame seed oil prevents the formation of atherosclerotic lesions in mice fed an atherogenic diet. Lignan, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory found in sesame seeds and known as susanol, has been identified as being partially responsible for the anti-atherogenic properties of the seeds. In fact, susanol has been shown to possess over 24 beneficial and pharmacologically active properties, many of which could contribute to improving cardiovascular health.
Depression: susanol, the lignan in sesame, has been shown to exert an antidepressant-like effect on behavioral despair in chronically stressed mice, specifically by modulating oxidative-nitrosative stress and inflammation.
Radiation-induced DNA damage : susanol has been shown to protect against gamma radiation-induced DNA damage, most likely through its antioxidant properties. It is capable of reducing mortality in laboratory mice treated against radiation, in part by preventing intestinal and spleen damage. When it was compared to another powerful antioxidant, melatonin, it was found to be 20 times more effective against free radicals.
Cancer: sesame contains a fat-soluble lignin with phytoestrogenic properties known as susanin, which has been studied to inhibit the proliferation of a wide range of cancers, including:
Leukemia
Multiple myeloma
Colon cancer
Prostate cancer
Breast cancer
Lung cancer
Pancreatic cancer
The anticancer effects of susanin have been linked to NF-kappaB signaling [16].
Sesame deserves to be recognized, together with garlic, honey, curcuma (turmeric) and a few other selected substances, as a food-medicine easily accessible and available to anyone, and which, if consumed regularly, could even save lives.
