Description
Postinor-1, 1500 micrograms, 1 orodispersible tablet, Gedeon Richter
Indications:
Postinor-1 is an emergency contraceptive that can be used in the first 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sexual contact or if your usual contraceptive method has failed.
It is used in the following situations:
- No contraceptive method was used during intercourse.
- The contraceptive method has been used incorrectly, for example if a condom has been punctured, slipped or used incorrectly, if the ovum or vaginal diaphragm has changed position, broken, torn or removed too soon, in the case of a failed interruptions during interrupted intercourse (for example, sperm was ejaculated in the vagina or on the external genitalia).
Postinor-1 contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic active substance with hormone-like activity.
It prevents about 84% of possible pregnancies if given within 72 hours after unprotected sex. It won't prevent pregnancy every time and is more effective if you take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It is better to take it in the first 12 hours than to delay until the third day.
Postinor-1 is believed to act as follows:
- prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg;
- prevents sperm from fertilizing any egg they may have already released.
Postinor-1 can only prevent pregnancy if you take it within the first 72 hours after unprotected sex. It has no effect if you are already pregnant. If you have another unprotected sexual intercourse after taking Postinor-1 (also if it happens during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is, again, a risk of pregnancy.
Contraindications:
Do not take Postinor-1:
- if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other components of this medicine.
Precautions:
Before taking Postinor-1, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Task:
You should not use this medicine if you are already pregnant. If you become pregnant even after taking this medicine, it is important to see your doctor. There is no evidence that Postinor-1 will harm the developing baby in your womb if you use Postinor-1 as directed. However, your doctor may want to check that the pregnancy is not ectopic (where the baby is developing somewhere outside the uterus). This warning is especially important if you experience severe abdominal pain after taking Postinor-1 or if you have had an ectopic pregnancy, fallopian tube surgery or pelvic inflammatory disease in the past.
Breastfeeding:
Very small amounts of the active substance of this medicine may appear in milk. This is not thought to harm the baby, but if you are concerned you can take the tablet immediately after breastfeeding and avoid breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking the tablet. By doing this, you take your tablet long before the next breast-feeding and reduce the amount of the active substance that your baby can take from the breast milk.
Fertility:
Postinor-1 increases the possibility of menstrual cycle disorders that can sometimes hasten or delay the day of ovulation, resulting in a change in the date of fertility. Although there are no long-term fertility data, fertility is expected to return quickly after treatment with Postinor-1, and therefore regular contraception should be continued or initiated as soon as possible after using Postinor-1.
Driving vehicles and using machines:
Postinor-1 is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, do not drive or use machines if you feel tired or dizzy.
Administration method:
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your pharmacist has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within the first 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after you had unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. The sooner you take the tablet after unprotected sex, the better it works.
The pill only helps you not get pregnant if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
Postinor-1 can be taken at any time of the menstrual cycle, assuming you are not already pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Remove the tablet from the blister by pressing with dry hands. The orodispersible tablet should be placed on the tongue, where it will dissolve and be swallowed with saliva. Do not chew the tablet.
If you are using one of the medicines that can prevent the action of Postinor-1 (see the section "Postinor-1 with other medicines" above) or if you have used one of these medicines in the last 4 weeks, it is possible that the action of Postinor-1 is more less effective in your case. Your doctor may prescribe a different type
of emergency (non-hormonal) contraception, i.e. a Copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD).
If this is not an option for you or if you cannot see the doctor immediately, you can take a double dose of Postinor-1 (ie 2 tablets taken at once).
If you are already using a regular contraceptive method, such as the contraceptive pill, you can continue to take it at the usual time.
If, after taking Postinor-1, you have another unprotected sexual intercourse (also if it occurs during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is a risk of pregnancy again.
If you are concerned about any aspects of emergency contraception administration, se
recommends that you see a healthcare professional.
If you vomit within three hours of taking the tablet, you must take another tablet.
If you have any further questions about this medicine, ask your doctor
you or your pharmacist.
