Several different plants are known under the name mallow. It is Althaea officinalis L, popularly called big mallow, white mallow, from which the flowers, leaves and roots are used; Althaea rosea, popularly called garden mallow, red mallow, rujalina, black roses, from which the flowers are used; Mlva glabra Desv. - mallow-of-culture; Malva silvestris L. - Forest mallow, colaceii-babei, malaga, from which the flowers and leaves are used; Malva neglecta Wallroth, popularly called casul-popii, cas, green mallow, small mallow, from which only the leaves are used.
Way of ussage:
Internal pulmonary secretolytic action, emollient, expectorant, anti-inflammatory of the respiratory, renal and gastro-intestinal system (due to mucilaginous substances and their hydrolysis products).
Internally, in the form of tea (cold maceration), for inflammations of the respiratory tract (cough, bronchitis, laryngitis) as well as for kidney infections and gastrointestinal disorders. External: emollient and anti-inflammatory action. The leaves and flowers are used externally in the form of poultices, as an emollient and sedative. Recommended for laryngitis, tracheitis, vaginal washes, dry skin. Mallow leaves mixed with chamomile flowers and poppy capsules give a good gargle for tonsillitis and dental abscesses.
In the form of an enema, they are used in hemorrhoids. Compresses are used on dry and wrinkled skin for 10-15 minutes. The roots kept in the mouth remove hoarseness, and in children they are used to favor the emergence of teeth.
Internal: cold maceration of a spoonful of root in 200 ml of water, at room temperature, for 25 minutes; after straining, add a knife tip with sodium bicarbonate, so as not to cause stomach irritation. The quantity is drunk in fractions, in 4-5 portions during a day, sweetened.
External : infusion - 2 tablespoons of leaves in 200 ml of boiling water; it is used in furunculosis. Decoction: 20 g of root per 100 ml of cold water; boil for 20 minutes; it is used as a gargle, in throat conditions (laryngitis, tracheitis) and in vaginal washes. Decoction (in cosmetics): 30 g of crushed root in 450 ml of cold water; boil for 15 minutes; it is used in the form of compresses for dry skin and wrinkles.
