Folic acid (folate) is important for the normal growth of germinal tissues during pregnancy. A rich, varied diet can provide about 200 micrograms of folic acid per day, with the recommended daily intake for adults being 400 micrograms and 600-1000 micrograms for pregnant women. In classical poor folic acid metabolizers (heterozygotes) (about 50% of the population) the efficiency of the MTHFR enzyme is reduced to about 75%, in classical poor folic acid metabolizers (homozygotes) (about 10% of the population) the efficiency of the MTHFR enzyme is reduced to about 25%.
