The valuable properties of coconut oil have been known to the inhabitants of Southeast Asia for centuries. In ancient India, the coconut palm was called a tree that satisfies all the needs of life. The local population consumes coconut oil in abundance. The beautiful complexion of Asian women delights the world, and research confirms that the percentage of people who die from a heart attack or stroke among Pacific Islanders is negligible compared to other parts of the world.
Virgin coconut oil (unrefined) is obtained by cold pressing the hard flesh of coconuts. At temperatures up to 40oC , a wealth of vitamins and minerals is obtained - vitamins B, C, E, folic acid, potassium, iron, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium .
The main ingredients of coconut oil are saturated fatty acids, especially lauric acid. Due to its medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), it has different properties than unhealthy animal fats (eg lard), which are composed of long-chain saturated fatty acids. Medium chain acids are smaller and easily digestible - they do not require pancreatic enzymes to break down. The absorption process begins with salivary enzymes, which is very important when feeding people with pancreatic diseases. They are quickly oxidized in the liver and used as a source of energy for other processes in the body, which prevents their accumulation in adipose tissue. Therefore, they stimulate the metabolism, do not cause obesity and can even support weight loss.
Virgin coconut oil is white in color and, without losing its properties, can change its consistency depending on room temperature. It has an intense coconut flavor.
Properties of unrefined coconut oil:
- bactericidal and body strengthening,
- anti-inflammatory and antioxidant,
- antifungal, due to the presence of caprylic acid,
- antibacterial and antiviral, which helps in the treatment of diseases of the digestive system, skin infections and acne.
Food use: Coconut oil has a smoke point close to 180C, so it can be used for frying and baking. However, long-term heat treatment of oil, as well as so-called deep frying, should be avoided. It is a perfect substitute for margarine or butter as an addition to cakes and bread. We can also use it successfully to prepare salads. Thanks to its strong coconut flavor, it gives dishes an oriental flavor.
Cosmetic use: Perfect as a natural cream and face mask, as well as a conditioner for hand and nail care. People with dry and very dry skin like to use coconut oil as a body lotion after bathing. The product works well as a soothing and moisturizing agent after shaving and waxing. Coconut oil peeling is becoming more and more popular. Just mix it with sugar and gently massage your body to enjoy regenerated epidermis and properly nourished skin.
